Monday 12th September Live Lounge
LO: to research the radio industry
Commercial radio provides brands with a way to speak to millions of people via a medium they trust. Commercial stations don't have the same kind of freedom in what they play as non-commercial radio. They want to play music by musicians who are playing shows in that station's market and have national name recognition. ITV, sky, heart
Commercial = paying or plenty of adverts to fund the channel
The public service broadcasters are those providing Channel 3 services, Channel 4, Channel 5, radio 1, S4C and the BBC.Rather than entertainment, such public-service systems would focus on cultural broadcasts, education, public affairs, and the like. these are services that benefit the public.
Commercial radio - HEART
MUSIC: heart mainly plays pop music and other songs that are currently popular or in the charts, sometimes older songs are on the radio
PRESENTERS: from the UK
ADVERTISEMENTS: holiday adverts, kids toys, shopping centers, back to school, christmas,
NEWS, WEATHER & TRAFFIC: trains getting delayed, storms or floods.

Each presenter shares a common age of mid 20s, this helps with the age theme of Radio 1
Monday 14th November BBC Radio and audiences
LO- to explore the BBC Radio and audience behind the live lounge.
the remit of Radio 1 is to entertain and engage its young listeners, with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech. its target audience is 15-29 year olds and it should also provide some programming for younger teenagers.
it should also offer a range of new music, support emerging artists, especially from the uk - and provide a platform for live music news documentaries and advice campaigns should cover areas of relevance to young adults. This picture is on the homepage of the BBC Radio 1 website, it helps to bring in the target audience (15-29) because its got 3 people in their 20s with different races and genders. this will help to show equality, which is exactly what the younger generation will be looking for.

This is showing that Radio 1 Live Lounge lives up to its name with live music. This is also supporting a newer released song.
This image shows people talking about helpful or important things that will draw in the attention of younger audiences. advice campaigns, life hacks and more to help people with their day to day life.
- radio 1 is the only station that appeals to younger audiences (15-29 year olds)
- it reflects diversity and equality
- Radio 1 doesn't appeal to the older audiences so isn't the same as commercial radio.
- produces live music
Against funding Radio 1
- Political decision makers don't agree that mainstream popular music is important enough to spend money on.
- Its not seen as educational or informing.
Media convergence is a term that can refer to the merging of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to digitisation and computer networking.
Its an advantage to access PSB radio on more platforms because it can be used on lots of different places and different ways.
Regulation
The radio is regulated by of-com, who cover the TV industry. they examine the complaints made against radio stations to determine if the broadcasting code has been breached.

Monday 28th November 2022 Live Lounge appeal and Format
LO - to explore the format of the show and its appeals.
The BBC Radio 1 team attempts to protect younger audiences in many ways. for instance, theres no swearing on the live radio until after 9pm so they can be sure that younger audiences aren't listening. There are also pre warnings for when they will be explaining content with mature themes on air, these themes could consist of abuse, self harm and suicide. These are used as a trigger warning incase the parents of younger audiences don't want them listening.
One advantage of broadcasting on two channels is that more people are likely to be listening to whatever is on. this means that theres a much wider audience listening to an artist and helping to make them heard by more people.

The Live Lounge is the name of a room at the Radio 1 studio where lots of the performances are broadcast. The Live Lounge performances are also broadcast from the larger BBC Maida Vale Studios in London.
Artists are filmed in this radio studio, acoustically and often without rehearsal. they usually perform one or two of their own songs and then their own swing of an A list Radio 1 artist who has had a release in the last 6 to 9 months, this will be a cover song.
What is the audience appeal of the Live Lounge? Why is it different to other radio shows?
the uses and gratifications
Personal identity - relating to the presenters who are a similar age, interests in music. identify with the artists
Information - background information about the artist, up and coming events.
Entertainment - enjoying the live music.
Social Interaction - people can discuss the performance afterwards.
The BBC Live Lounge appeals to the audience by adding in the uses and gratifications, these are; personal identity, this is when the viewer or listener can relate to the presenters, style of music or the artist, information, this is when the viewer or listener is given background information about the artists, songs or coming up events, Entertainment, this one is pretty self explanatory, the BBC team try to keep the Live Lounge interesting or fun to listen to at all times so people are entertained. and last, social interaction, some of the BBC Live Lounge is online so people are free to comment and share their opinion on whats been said on air, people can also forward this to friends and family to socialise with them about it.
pop and mainstream music is not seen as mainstream significant
live music is more expensive due to set up, musicians, instruments and space
3 days prep - wages for people involved in performance or production
6 6 professional singers - employed as backing singers, introduced to the song and had to learn the words. and how to perform it and the melody.
musical director - make a recorded song and translate it to a live performance
add instruments and singers.
How does the Live Lounge appeal to the target audience and meet the BBC remit?
Extension
- young presenters (apprenticeships)
Monday 9th January 2023 Live Lounge appeal and format
LO - to explore the format of an exam question and how to respond
BBC Radio 1 has a job to entertain an audience of 15-29 year olds, their job is to entertain, inform and engage a broad range of listeners. The Live Lounge also appeals to the uses and gratifications and involves live music with young and new artists normally from the UK.
How does the Live Lounge appeal to the target audience and meet the BBC remit?
- using presenters who are in the same age range as the target audience.
- the audience are 15-29 year olds.
-the audience are appealed to things such as the Live Lounge because its got live music and supports young and new artists who are mainly from the UK.
- the remit of BBC Radio 1 is to inform, entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners.
- the remit is met by using the Live Lounge, in the Live Lounge live music is played often by new and young artists from the UK
The Live Lounge appeals to the target audience by hiring younger presenters (Melvin Charlie and Ricky) that are in the same age range as the target audience (15-29). This will mean that the presenters can say things that the audience of young viewers may find relatable and will help the audience feel entertained and enjoy what they're listening to. the presenters use slang such as "sick" or "big ups" while they converse about topics that fit in with the younger crowd like social media platforms. this fits in perfectly with the remit as the remit is to entertain and inform the target audience of 15-29 year olds.
Another reason that the Live Lounge appeals to the target audience and meets the remit is because the Live Lounge specialise in playing Live music performed by new young and upcoming artists (self esteem) normally from the UK, they support these artists mainly because they are in the same age range as the target audience. This fits to the BBC remit because its entertaining and informing a broad range of listeners with a mix of exciting, new music and the presenters talking about relatable things 15-29 year olds about new artists in the UK.
9/1/- Excellent work here, T:1. You need to ensure that you give specific examples from the Live Lounge you listened that show how that particular show appealed to the audience. E.g songs played, conversation or words used.
Monday 23rd January 2023
Ofcom is the regulator for Radio in the UK.
The BBC owns radio 1.
public service broadcasting is radio that is for the publics benefit instead of to make money with advertisements.
Its good to listen to radio live because it gives opportunities for people to get involved with the conversation by calling in.
a positive to listening to it online after its been live is that you can now pause it or listen to it more than once.
Producers of radio programmes target different audiences so that they can gain more views by catching the interest of their targeted audience. Producers of radio programmes have one job, to make people want to watch. The BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge targets their audience, which is 15-29 year olds by hiring young, diverse presenters with informal speech. They are expected to use slang such as "big up", the idea of this is that viewers are most likely to relate to these presenters and feel understood. This will entice them to listen more, gaining the companies money.

The Exam
The music section of paper 2 has 5 questions. Questions 1, 2 and 3 could be on Radio.
Question one
vertical integration
Part two
.
Part three
taxes fund the BBC Radio 1
Question two
One way that the Radio stations target their audiences is by playing specific artists or genres to match with what the audience may like, in Radio 1 they play Raye and Self-esteem, these are both young, new and upcoming UK artists/groups.
Another way that Radio stations attract their target audiences is by hiring presenters that fit into the age ranges of the target audience so that listeners can relate to the presenters.
Part two
To meet the requirements of a PSB radio station the presenters need to be able to educate, inform and entertain the audiences, there shouldn't be ads or anything of the sort to better themselves. This could involve, talking about the news in local areas such as traffic.
Part three
Radio audiences have the choice to be active by calling in to the station to win challenges or prizes, however if they choose not to do this they can be a passive listener and choose to not get involved or to just listen along.
Question three
BBC has to provide a wider range of context than commercial radio because they rely on tax payers money to pay for everything that they need to add. They need what they're presenting and producing to attract the target audience or they will not be given their budget to produce radio. They do this by promoting new, emerging artists such as Raye and using the Live Lounge to do so will intertwine this with entertainment.

Question 2
Explain one way that radio stations target their audiences
One way that BBC Radio one attracts their target audience of 15-29 year olds is through the Live Lounge by hiring young presenters who the audience may be able to relate to, especially while the presenters are using slang words like "sick" or "big up" to keep the stations mood as chatty and relaxed.

The BBC radio provide a wider range of context than commercial radio. One example of this is The Live Lounge and the live music that is played there, it is part of the BBC radio one remit to play live music to entertain and to support emerging artists. -
The point of the music video for Avril Lavigne's Sk8er boi is to show off a teenage rebel theme during her song. By doing this, it will encourage an audience of teens to watch her music video and listen to her other music. This will help to promote her brand.
The narrative element of this song is where background characters promote an illegal street concert of sorts. Everyone is putting up posters or spray painting symbols.

mise-en-scene

- performance (positioning, facial expressions, body language)
Question;
This costume has been used in a song about surviving a break up. We can tell this costume has been thought out to make her look like a fighter because she looks strong and powerful in a camo outfit. it ties in to a solider fighting a war. This could help us assume that the relationship was a war and thats why its over.
Question;
The way he's dressed gives us the idea that he's supposed to look like a wealthy man from the present era. his costume also presents the idea of a hip-hop or pop genre due to his hat and sunglasses matched with his gold chain.
Question;
In this music video, Taylor swift is laying in an expensive looking bath full of money, diamonds and expensive jewellery. This promotes her status as extremely rich.
Sk8er Boi
in this scene we can see her outfit is pretty colourful and looks kind of odd together. It doesn't match and that could give us a tomboy theme or even a punk rock theme with her wristbands, backwards cap and heavy dark eye makeup. theres also an obvious teenage rebellion theme throughout the music video. You can see this here where the teens are riding skateboards and bikes inside and again where they draw satanic symbols everywhere to remind people of the illegal concert they're holding in the middle of a street on a car. Teenage Dirtbag
Thursday 9th February 2023
bright and colourful costumes, colourful and overdramatic makeup to create a party and happy scene
Lo - to examine the use of media language in music videos
Two elements of mise-en-scene that stand out in sk8er boi are their outfits because they give off a punk rock theme and match with their mood, and the props (bikes skateboards and spray paint) because they show off a rebellious mood
in Avril Lavigne's music video, its set in an urban area (a city). We know this as we are shown shots of moving traffic and skyscrapers. in my opinion the video is set here because it makes a great setting for rebellious teenage video.
Avril Lavigne and her friends are dressed in a punk rock tomboy outfit. this is achieved by using clothes that don't match, ties and chains. This could suggest to the audience that Avril and her friends are in a punk rock band and the song is a punk rock genre. This also suggests that Avril is not a stereotypical feminine popstar.
The 'loser' is wearing lots of plain clothes and a hat to cover his head, This could mean that he wears these to blend in with the crowd. He doesn't consider himself popular or worthy of attention
The music videos for Avril Lavigne's sk8er boi and Wheatus' Teenage dirtbag use setting and costume to achieve similar effects. for example, the main characters in both of the music videos are wearing outfits that don't match and both dress like teenagers. Both of the songs are about love and both main characters have a love interest.

LO - explore how camerawork is used to create meaning in music videos
1. She's all alone in a huge field, she looks lonely. She is obviously the main character because She's in the middle of the video and is the only person there in this wide shot. Her outfit is very feminine and isn't too exciting, this fits with the bleak background.
2. The artist could be singing about heartbreak or abandonment considering she's alone and far from people. she is isolated from all people so this will probably have something to do with whatever she's singing about.
Camerawork
- Shot type
- Angle
- Movement

Naturalistic - Most common form of camera work. Shots are either fixed or handheld (for realism) or have subtle slower movements
Expressionistic - More uncommon and artistic/creative use of camera shots and movement. Often shows extreme angles or quick movements.
Teenage dirtbag is naturalistic and Sk8er boi is expressionistic.
1. Shot name - long shot
Why used - ; to show the characters as a group
Why used here - shows the band and Avril Lavigne as the featured artist
2. Shot name - POV
Why used? - to show the POV of someone in the audience
Why used now? - she is the main focus of everyone so people want to film just her
3. Shot type - extreme long shot
Why used? - to express how lonely he is
Why used now?- you can see the part at the top that says loser so that everyones aware that he has no friends
4. Shot name - high angle, long shot
Why used? - to show that she's in the middle of all there people Who support her
Why used now? - she's the main focus of all of these people, they love her, this also makes it obvious that she's the main character
5. Shot name - mid shot
Why used? - to make the "bully" seem powerful with his mates.
Why used now? - while singing about the "bully" they put him in the middle of the screen so it's obvious who they're talking about to the audience.
Sk8er boi
00:08 tilt
00:14 zoom
00:25 high angle
camerawork - Fast, shaking, energetic
The camerawork in sk8er boi is expressionistic. For example, at one point in the video there is lots of fast cutting scenes. The high angle camerawork fits the tone of the song because Avril is constantly surrounded by people who want to see her.
Thursday 9th March
LO - To explore how sound and editing are used to create meaning in music videos.
Sound is divided into diegetic and non diegetic.
diegetic sounds are those from inside the world of the text (that the characters can hear)
Non-diegetic sounds are sounds outside the world of the film that the characters cannot hear.
1. One example of diegetic sound in sk8er boi is the spray paint cans at the start of the music video. There have been included to draw attention to the graffiti and the rebellious teen theme.
what does editing include?
There are two types of editing
Linear editing
-Events are edited / presented in chronological order
- more traditional / cinematic
Non-linear editing
- out-of-order editing
- no clear distinction of time
-more abstract / expressionistic
1. sk8er boi has a faster pace and more cuts, maybe this is because it isn't a narrative song and the music is a fast pop song.
2. Teenage dirtbag has a longer shot length, this is because it has a narrative storyline so the longer shots help to tell the story.
3. teenage dirtbag and sk8er boi both cut on the beat for the most of the music video but sk8er boi cuts more and faster.
4. There are special effects in teenage dirtbag. at the beginning of the music video a transition is used to go from him sleeping to inside his dream. another is the slow motion where his love interest is walking towards him with tickets to something that she wants to invite him to. this is here to resemble his desire for her in a slow motion shot.
Exam style question
One way in which music videos use mise-en-scene to differ from other music videos is by picking settings and costumes that fit the music genre or whatever the artist is singing about. Sk8er boi is set in a busy city and each main character is dressed in a grunge/emo style to resemble a rebellious group of teens, this helps them to grasp a target audience of teens. On the other hand teenage dirtbag is set in a school where everyone is in lots of colourful clothes to fit the genre of the song.
Thursday 23rd March 2023
LO: to explore how representations are constructed in music videos.
Representation - stereotypes, counter types, masculine/feminine, powerful, dominant, weak, objectification, underrepresentation.
Objectification - the action of degrading someone to the status of a mere object.
Sexual objectification - when a male/female views another male/female primarily as an object of sexual desire rather than as a person.
1. Avril Lavigne has been presented as a rebellious, naughty teenage girl. This has been done by putting her in punk rock clothes while she's doing rebellious activities such as riding a bike or skateboards inside the school building or jumping on top of cars in a city street.
2. Avril's choice of outfit and jewellery give off a punk rock genre and this is enhanced by the use of the props like guitars, drum sets and the rest of the groups clothing choices.
3. one clothing choice that Avril often uses is the messily tied tie around her neck, this could signify that she is a rebellious teenager who doesn't comply with school uniforms or dress codes.
4. The setting for most of the music video is an urban city, the city looks mildly deprived and in need of some repairs. the last scene is in a massive street where Avril is surrounded by skyscrapers, this shows off the choice of her urban setting.
5. Avril breaks gender stereotypes in the music video by acting as a rule breaking tomboy instead of a typical feminine character who would be portrayed as sweet and kind. however this blonde girl at the beginning does fit into gender stereotypes due to certain features like that she does ballet.
6. ethnicity is poorly represented in the music video. Most of the people in the crowd at the concert are white teenagers.
1. The band in teenage dirtbag have been represented as kind of silly and comfortable in their environment. in one cut scene of the band you can see them pretending to play their instruments with fruit, this adds a comedy theme to the music video.
2. the male protagonist is presented as a loser or outcast for most of the music video, in the hallway people continuously call him a loser and in one scene he is sat alone at a lunch table. the clothes he wears to prom also look "unfashionable" compared to everyone else's. The female protagonist is presented as a pretty popular girl who everyone likes, she's dating the bully for most of the music video but seems to like the male protagonist near to the end, she is presented as something he desires.
3. there is not much ethnicity represented in the music video, most of the cast is white.
4. The high school is represented as a typical american school with teens separated into groups like the bullies for instance who are popular and liked by everyone. The main representative aspect of the music video is how the prom is a stereotypical theme.
5. There are plenty of typical gender stereotypes during the music video, the bully is a stereotypical male who is strong and brave and scary and the female protagonist is a stereotypical female who is pretty and kind and loveable.
Thursday 30th March 2023
LO - to explain the construction of representation in music videos.
2. Teenagers are represented as rebellious and careless in both music videos. in teenage dirtbag teens are represented as if they were in an american movie more than a real life event, this is similar with sk8er boi.
3. Women are represented as a prize to be won in both music videos. Both songs are about relationships and about winning the girl.
4. both artists are presented to be cool and popular or liked in their music videos, Avril Lavigne is presented as a rebellious teen with a grunge/emo kind of style and Wheatus as a band are presented as quite funny or silly but trendy.
5. rebellious attitudes are represented in the music videos, especially sk8er boi.
6. in both music videos the female is pretty and is considered a prize, both casts are predominantly white and relationships are both stereotypically straight.
Thursday 20th April 2023
LO - to explore and practice exam style questions.
four mark question
Avril Lavigne challenges female stereotypes in Sk8er Boi by acting and looking like a rebellious teen, she isn't dressed in feminine clothes that are bright and colourful and that show off her body like most females do in music videos, instead she's in baggy dark coloured clothes and dark makeup. she's not treated like a prize to be won and her tomboy/rebel aesthetic is made very obvious throughout the music video, for example when she creates an illegal concert in the middle of a busy road.
However in Teenage Dirtbag, the female is stereotypically popular and pretty. she wears feminine clothes such as short skirts, tight fitting shirts and makeup. she is considered and treated like no more than the prize for a man to win. This is a direct contrast to how Avril Lavigne is represented in Sk8er Boi.
Ten mark question
Music video producers often use stereotypes in music videos because this makes it easier for audiences to recognise a characters personality or how they're portrayed.
In both Teenage Dirtbag and Sk8er Boi there are plenty of examples of stereotypes, an example of this in Teenage Dirtbag is the boyfriend of the female love interest is a stereotypical teenage male, he's strong, popular and looks like someone who shouldn't be messed with. These have been used to give us that impression of him. Another example of a stereotype in Teenage Dirtbag is the stereotypical american school location and stereotypical students found in them such as pretty, popular girls or strong, sporty boys.
Stereotypes are also used in the Sk8er Boi music video. One example of this is teenagers being rebellious and misbehaving. This is represented with teens riding bikes and skateboards indoors, graffitiing public property and setting up an illegal concert in the middle of the busy street. This gives off the idea that they disregard the rules and promotes a rebellious stereotype thats usually associated with teenagers. Another example of how stereotypes are used in Sk8er Boi is the way each male is presented in big groups in the same style of baggy, dark coloured clothes while doing something adrenaline filled/sporty. This suggests that all males are interested in the same types of things and styles.
